Thousands of residents thronged Shri Jwala Mukhi Mandir here this afternoon to pay obeisance to an 11-month-old male infant having a tail, considered to be an avtar of Lord Hanuman. The devotees, majority of whom were women, offered money after having “darshan” of the child. Long queues of women and children could be seen outside the temple.
Mr Iqbal, alias, Babu Ram, maternal grandfather of the child, who accompanied the child here told this correspondent that this baby, whom he called ‘Bala ji’ was born on February 15, 2001 at Nabipur village (Fatehgarh Sahib) and had a tail. The mother of the child Ms Salma was also sitting besides him.
Babu Ram claimed that “Bala ji” has nine spots on his body like Lord Hanuman. He showed these spots to this correspondent one by one and claimed that “Bala ji” did not blink his eyes even. The child has a 4-inch-long tail. The child has been invited here by the temple management in connection with centenary celebrations of the temple.
Babu Ram said “Bala ji” had already been invited to Govindgarh and Malerkotla where a large number of devotees paid obeisance.

The 11-month-old boy with a 4-inch tail has been named Bajrangbali, another name for Hanuman.
Iqbal Qureshi, the child's maternal grandfather, who lives in Kharar town just outside Chandigarh in northern Punjab state, is taking Bajrangbali from temple to temple, where people offer money to pay their obeisance. He told journalists that his grandson was the Hindu deity's reincarnation.
Women and children have been offering money and bowing before the baby to pay their respect.
Hindus believe in miracles and reincarnation and Hanuman is among the most popular of Hinduism's more than 1,000 gods and goddesses.

Kharar, January 10: IN simple medical terms it is just a malformation. But for residents of this otherwise sleepy township, it is easier to believe in the supernatural than the logical. And so, thousands of them today thronged the ancient Basanti Devi Annapoorna Mandir in Neem Wala Chowk here, where a boy with three so-called similarities to Hanuman, the Hindu deity, was the special invitee at the centenary celebrations of the temple.
The child, who was delivered by a Muslim lady Salma Begum at Nabipur village in Fatehgarh Sahib district on February 15 last year, was brought here by his mother, maternal grandfather Iqbal Qureishi, and some other close relatives. He had a tail, a mark of Gana (a thread Hanuman used to tie on his left arm, according to popular images) and an injury mark on his left foot (Hanuman is supposed to have sustained a similar injury when Bharat shot at him with an arrow).
As news of the abnormal child spread like wildfire and soon, crowds of the blatantly curious and the blindly devout began to throng the ancient temple. He has never been taken to a doctor.
With no voice speaking up for logic or medicine, superstition has run rife. The eleven-month-old child is referred to as Bajrangbali or Babaji, some sadhus of Hardwar and Rishikesh have even hailed him as an avatar of Hanuman. So-called devotees have also constructed a shrine near his birthplace, and offered huge sums as donation.
Iqbal Qureishi keeps the myth alive in his own way. He says the child neither cries nor laughs. He doesn’t even blink his eyes, he claims. However, on seeing the reporter interacting with Iqbal, the baby let out a very normal lusty cry and started bawling.
The child’s maternal grandfather says, his mentor Bashir Ahmed Sabri, priest of Hazrat Bandgi Sahib Sirhind Sharief, has instructed him to keep the child’s mother and father apart for 15 months, and to take utmost care of the baby.
This translates into keeping the child away from any medical treatment. It is the blessings of the Almighty, he says stubbornly, when it is suggested that the baby be subjected to a medical examination. When contacted, the medical experts say it could be a congenital deformity either due to an extension of the coccyx (the tail-bone) or a soft tumour. They also said the boy’s abnormalities could be due to some congenital deformation or a deformity of the spinal cord.
The child should be examined immediately by an expert paediatric surgeon, asserted the experts.
But in the present circumstances, that might be asking for too much. The abnormal child is scheduled to stay here tonight before leaving for Nabipur tomorrow, informed Qureishi.

Godmen’s hold over people tight as ever

It’s a social paradox. People of the most modern city of the country believe in the most primitive of rituals. Warding off evil spirits through black magic, astrologers and palmists, coercing their disciples for various rituals, or the godmen frequenting the city and its satellite townships are proof of the residents’ growing quest for the unknown.
On any Saturday, one can find a steady stream of people queue along the old Ghaggar bridge to throw black grams, coconuts or lead in the water. Or one can find rubber slippers lying upside down at various crossings. The “Shani Dev”, men dressed in white, are much sought after on Saturdays, as people donate mustard oil after seeing their reflection in the oil, with some coins to ward off the eye of the Saturn.
But the city turns back in time not just on Saturdays, but on other days too. Often one can find lemons or iron locks lying in the centre of various crossings, and if one’s vehicle was to pass over these, they rush to an astrologer seeking divine intervention for having taken upon oneself somebody else’s misfortunes.
As if these were not enough, the city residents today began queuing outside the Baba Pir Sakhi Sarwar “dargah” for a divine experience of a different kind. A three-year-old boy, who is projected as the reincarnation of Lord Hanuman, was reportedly in town, blessing childless couples, children whose board results are awaited, businessmen who have suffered losses or anybody who had a sob story to offer and needed “divine intervention”. As they touched the toddler’s feet, the latter blessed them murmuring “Jai Shri Ram” to his “followers”.
And the boy’s claim to be a reincarnation of Lord Hanuman? He has a seven-inch-long tail, rounded feet, and a mark on the left arm, as if the arm had been tied by something. Says the boy’s maternal grandfather, Iqbal Qureshi: “When he was born to my daughter, Salma, the midwife had told us that he was a reincarnation of Lord Hanuman and had a small tail like the Hindu God. He had a mark on the arm, as if he had been wearing armlet like the Lord, and his left foot bore a mark, as if it was hit by an arrow, just like Lord Hanuman had after He was hit with an arrow by Bharat. We are Muslims and are not conversant with the Hindu mythology, but the midwife told about the reincarnation of Lord Hanuman to everybody in our village, Nabipur, near Fatehgarh Sahib.”
Since then, there has been no looking back for the family of Bajrang Bali, alias Balaji. His father expired two years ago and mother and elder brother Mani live with Balaji’s paternal grandparents, while Qureshi has taken charge of the boy. In fact, a dera has been opened by the Qureshis in the village and followers of Lord Hanuman throng the dera every Tuesday with offerings of orange clothes, fruits, sweets and of course cash.
Even today, as the city residents flocked to the “dargah”, they cajoled the toddler to bless them, as Qureshi narrated incidents where Balaji’s blessings had helped tide away people’s problems. We asked him the success rate of Balaji’s blessings and Qureshi puts the figure at 10 per cent. “But Balaji is young, as he grows older his predictions will get more accurate,” he adds, even as the followers stare at you for offending their religious feelings by asking such a question and again chant “Jai Shri Ram”.

HERE´S one of our strangest tales yet to be told - a baby bornwith a tail!
And stranger still, Hindus thoughout India believe the 11-month-old boy is the reincarnation of a monkey-faced deity named Lord Hanuman. His family has named the boy Balaji or Bajrangbali, which are the deity´s other names.
Doctors say the 4-inch growth sticking out of Balaji´s bottom is just a mutation that occurredin the womb. But crowds of devout Hindus are flocking to temples to see the child they believe is divine. They offer money to Balaji´s maternal grandfather, Iqbal Qureshi, who says his grandson also has spots on his body just like Lord Hanuman.
Sources say the family hopes to keep the boy from growing up spoiled as a result of being told he´s a god.
